Orion logo The first milestone in the development of the browser-based IDE Eclipse Orion 2.0 has been released. A major focus in the development of Orion 2.0 is to bring node.js support to the IDE and while these are described as "large scale efforts" for future builds, the developers have decided to share a prototype of a node-based Orion server. Orionode, the prototype server, is a single user deployment of Orion running on node.js. "Having all the client and server tools written in the same language also raises some new possibilities and makes the Orion architecture very flexible" say the developers, but they note that the project is not ready for prime time yet.

Back at the main branch of Orion, as found on OrionHub, new features include the ability to narrow searches by file types, search and replace supporting regular expression capture groups, and desktop drag and drop of files into the Orion environment, though this is only fully supported with Chrome. The editor themes now work with the CSS and HTML editors and all editors work better with Chrome running on Android.

A new "Prospecto" editor theme and the ability to set the editor font size with the theme settings are also new. The shell commands are joined by plugins for plugin management, service for service management and clear which simply clears the screen; the shell can also now be opened from the navigator. Finally, the Orion developers have switched OrionHub to using HTTPS connections; support has been available for some time, but has only just made it to the OrionHub server. The 2.0M1 code is available to download.
