Enyo logo The latest version of the Enyo JavaScript framework now comes with LESS-based theming support and globalisation/localisation support. The update comes after the HP-sponsored development team recently added four new team members and are looking to expand. The Enyo project is part of the software foundation of WebOS and open WebOS, but since then, Enyo 2 has become a general purpose JavaScript framework for all browsers.

The LESS-based theming allows for easy customisation of Enyo's Onyx UI; a UI theming guide provides an introduction to the processes involved. The globalisation/localisation library was written originally for the HP Touchpad and has now been released as an Enyo 2 compatible library complete with a localisation guide which shows how to create locales and apply them to dates, times, strings or phone numbers.

The 2.1 update also incorporates wider browser support with Chrome for Android and iOS 6 being made tier 1 platforms; further support is promised as IE10 is already working in desktop/mouse form and work is being done on supporting Windows 8 touch events and HTML5 runtime, along with Kindle Fire HD. Enyo 2.1 also gains a number of new widgets: an ImageView widget with zooming, panning and multi-touch support, an ImageCarousel for flipping through image views, a RangeSlider and localisable DatePickers and TimePickers. Full details of all the changes are in the release notes.

The developers say that, as well as the extended browser support, a future release of the Enyo framework should include the results of their work in creating data binding support and an optional MVC library they have been developing. Until then, users can get Enyo 2.1 via the project's GitHub repository or downloadDirect download a zip file of the latest release, all published under the Apache 2.0 licence.
