Duke with raspberry The first developer preview of the Java SE 8 for ARM is now ready to be downloaded under a proprietary early adopter licence. One of the platforms the preview works on is the Raspberry Pi. Java SE 8 for ARM is designed for developing applications for embedded systems and includes JavaFX for Linux on ARM processors. JavaFX is Oracle's framework for cross-platform rich-client applications and is seen by Oracle as the long-term future of user interfaces in Java.

The Oracle development team are hoping that the community can provide feedback on the state of the ARM development through their forums. Stephen Chin, Java Technology Evangelist at Oracle, says that the combination of Java and small embedded devices should make it a great platform for experimenting with small embedded projects or as a low cost system for teaching. He has produced a 3-step guide to setting up Linux and the Java preview on the Raspberry Pi.
