Developer Break: OWASP, Hadoop, iOS to HTML5, Eclipse and Ruby

Developer Break – catch up on the smaller but important notes for developers, from libraries to APIs and from people to postings. This week:

• A first draft of the OWASP Top 10 2013 for application and service security on the web is available for review on the project's web site. Comments can be submitted until 30 March, and the finished list is currently scheduled for publication in May 2013.

• Hadoop-2.0.3-alpha is now available; it offers features such as multi-resource scheduling for CPU and memory as well as the option to restart the ResourceManager for YARN and QJM for HDFS.

• Interested developers can preview the new features of the Wakanda open source development platform for rich business internet applications. Among these features is the ability to establish a direct GitHub connection, to use a Chrome debugger to edit server-side JavaScript code, and to dynamically create data models via JavaScript.

• Intel has released the beta version of an HTML5 app porter tool that can, Intel says, help developers with porting native iOS code to HTML5.

• Elasticsearch has managed to secure $24 million for the future development of the project. The open source search server works with Apache Lucene and counts about 200,000 downloads per month.

• In a blog post, Mike Milinkovich has written about changes that affect the contribution process for Eclipse. If you'd like to be part of the discussions on this topic, take a look at Eclipse bug 401236.

• Actuate and YASH Technologies are offering a connector that allows SAP Business Warehouse data to be integrated into BIRT (Business Intelligence and Reporting Tools).

• The developers of the Cappuccino web platform are looking for help, both in terms of time or donations, to port the build system of the Objective-J superset of JavaScript and Cocoa-esque UI framework over to the Node.js ecosystem.

• Just before the arrival of Ruby 2.0, the Ruby developers shipped Ruby 1.9.3-p392 with security fixes for JSON and REXML issues.
