Bootstrap logo The Bootstrap developers have announced the release of version 2.2.0 of their open source web front-end toolkit. This new major update is the project's first release since leaving Twitter, which made the framework available as open source in August of last year, and brings with it dozens of fixes as well as new templates and a new media component.

Bootstrap 2.2.0 introduces four new example templates: these include a lightweight narrow marketing page, a simple sign in form with custom controls, a sticky footer and an interactive carousel page. A new media component for creating larger common components such as comments or Tweets has been added, as has a new variable-driven typographic scale which allows users to control margins, paddings and line heights throughout the page design from a single variable in the CSS.

Other changes include fixes for z-index issues with tooltips and popovers in modals, updating the JavaScript plugins to jQuery 1.8.1 and various improvements and documentation updates. Dropdown submenus have also been improved to add support for dropups and left-aligned submenus. The developers say that they are still working to move the project, which is still listed under Twitter on GitHub, to its own organisation on the collaboration service's site. The move will also take place alongside "a couple other big changes" which the team say they will provide details about "soon".

Further information, including a full list of fixes and new features, can be found in the announcement blog post and on the 2.2.0 milestone page. Bootstrap 2.2.0 is available to downloadDirect download from GitHub under version 2.0 of the Apache Licence.
