Amazon Web Services logo Users and developers who want to get experience with relational databases in the Amazon Web Service's Relational Database Service (RDS) can now do so thanks to Amazon's addition of a free usage tier for RDS. The RDS Free Usage Tier gives 750 hours of a single micro DB instance, which is enough to run a DB instance continuously each month, with 20GB of database storage, 20GB of backup storage, and allowing for up to 10 million I/O operations.

Users can run MySQL, Oracle or Microsoft SQL Server Express as their database, though Oracle requires the customer to bring their own licence. The offer allows new AWS Free Tier users twelve months of RDS use and then reverts to normal pay as you go pricing.

For further details on the RDS offer, Amazon has a Free RDS FAQ page. Details of Amazon's range of Free Usage Tier services, including EC2, Elastic Load Balancer, Elastic Block Storage, S3 and its other database services, DynamoDB and SimpleDB, are also available.
